Department of Dermatology

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a speciality with both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist is a physician who is trained to evaluate and treat children and adults with benign and malignant disorders of the skin, hair, nails and adjacent mucous membranes. A dermatologist also treats diseases and cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails.

The different types of skin diseases seen in the Department of Dermatology include:

Vitiligo

Patient consulting a Dermatologist Vitiligo or leukoderma is a benign skin disease that causes depigmentation. Apart from the obvious cosmetic challenge it poses, the fact that it is still widely confused with leprosy makes it the commonest presenting complaint in our dermatological OPD.

Fungal infection

Fungal infection/tinea can affect any area of the body including the scalp and the nails. Seasonal flares are common. They respond well to weekly oral antifungals.

Pemphigus

It is a skin disease characterised by severe bullous eruptions and systemic compromise ranging from mild to life-threatening. The disease course is long with exacerbations and remissions.
